I heard about this guy the other day, John Coultan, who was a former programmer turned musician. The funny thing about this guy is he is making music but distributing it royalty free. There is a HUGE debate still going on re: rights to music and media. Artists want to get paid. He is taking the approach that he will get paid by getting famous.
